A weekly reading seminar designed for university students to read deeply in 18th-century sources and debate the competing meanings of freedom and governance. The seminar will use essential texts that demonstrate the lively intellectual exchange of the era, including Daniel Dulany’s Considerations on the Propriety of Imposing Taxes, John Dickinson’s Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, Samuel Adams’s The Rights of Colonists, Thomas Jefferson’s A Summary View of the Rights of British America, and Thomas Paine’s radical call for liberty in Common Sense.
