SUMMARY:Teaching American History Seminar -- America at 250: The Legacy of the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:There have been thousands of books and articles written about the Declaration of Independence\, and its ringing words make an appearance in every American History textbook. Given all of this commentary and interpretation\, is it still possible to understand the Declaration as its authors understood it? In this seminar\, we will discuss the primary sources that best illuminate the Declaration’s meaning and imbue its words with living significance. \nThis is a private event.

SUMMARY:Teaching American History Seminar — Westward Expansion: Visions\, Land\, and Conservation and Environmentalism
DESCRIPTION:The American West was an alluring vision that invited both use and exploitation. America was to be a new order of the ages; the West was where American settlers would build it. As settlers streamed west\, however\, the land of open resource and opportunity was quickly transformed. The seminar will examine early visions of the west\, some of the many ways the land was used and changed in the nineteenth century\, and the rise of the conservation and environmental movements in the twentieth century. \nThis is a private event.
